The Garfagnana

The Garfagnana is in the Northern part of the Lucca area, at the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna.

It is the upper part of the valley of the Serchio River where the various torrents of the Mountains between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna flow.

It is predominantly mountainous even though there are no particularly high mountains; it is a green valley hemmed in the Apuan Alps and the Apennines. The Orecchiella and Apuan parks safeguard its natural heritage, along with the Lipu Oasi (Italian Union for the protection of birds) and the WWF.

Here you can visit lots of strongholds that have preserved their historical characteristics.

In order to show the deep influence of the medieval periods a lot of villages organize historic and gastronomic festivals where people can enjoy songs, dances, costumes and savors of the ancient times.

The one that takes place in Sillico is certainly one of the most beautiful…every year thousands of people come here to visit the village and attend the festival, that occurs the last Saturday of July, the first Saturday of August and the 14th of August. Don’t miss this event!! You can stay up late at night with lots of young people that gather in the “osterie” to drink, eat and sing.

Everything takes place respecting medieval uses and customs; the menu includes typical dishes of the Garfagnana area, which are served with good wine. In the “osterie” you can find ham, cheese, salami, together with home made bread, grappa and aromatic wine.
